Ways to remember techniques and forms

I find that when I test or when I practice I often remember everything sequentally. This becomes a problem when I get asked a technique at random or to do a form backwards.

The only way I've found that helps is practicing them out of order or backwards. I'm wondering if there could be an easier way that I'm overlooking.

Any ideas?

We do a lot of full contact sparring with varying degrees of application. For example, (and please forgive my spelling) we do technique sparring where one person is the attacker and the other a defender. The attacker will grab the defender anywhere on their person and it will be up to the defender to decide which technique to respond with. The attacker will resist the technique, so if a technique can't be applied properly it will be up to the defender to try a different one. I find this very helpful in training onesself to react to an unpredictable attack since you don't know where or how someone is goign to grab you. Also, it isn't choreographed and the attacker will resist your technique so it is much more realistic than the drills conducted to facilitate learning the technique (where resistance would prevent someone from learning the sequence of movement in its entirety.) Usually the attacker will try several grabs and after several successful techniques by the defender they will switch roles. This is particularly effective since the attacks are limited to grabbing and do not include striking. We also have other "limited" types of full contact sparring that focus on a particlar aspect of Kuk Sool. All the way up to "anything goes" . Hope this was helpful.
